The conductor has such attitude because Helen walked through the "White 0nly" car of the train. It's forbidden to the coloured people. She did not respect the law of segregation.
2) The conductor talked badly in a racist's way to Helen when she walked through the car of the train reserved to white people. She immediatly smiled and apologized as soon as she understood her mistake. In fact, the scene brought her back to her black woman condition. We can feel the fear of Helen through her attitude : she's totally afraid . By smiling and apologizing to the white man she shows him his superiority. But seeing how black soldiers looked at her and how the white conductor talked to her in front of her daughter, it was an ambarassing moment for her
This scene revealed the weakness of Nel's mother and the little girl was in a way upset by the racist way the white man spoke to her mother and how black men looked at her. When she said :"It was on that train, ................. she resolved to be on guard. Through that sentence Nel wants to stress on the fact that event awake her consciousness and she won't late any treat her like that.(no men will look at her like this). She wants to be herself , to be the opposite of her mother's attitude " her foolish smile" thought of Nel underline the shame her mother causes her despiter her young age.
" She wanted to make certain that no men ever looked at her this way. This sum up all Nel's deep feelings She will propably struggle against racism and men bad attitude.
